'Spirit' recognition:In recognition of the "Spirit of 45 Day," St. Charles VFW Post 5036 will host a flag-raising ceremony at 7 this morning in front of the Post at 119 N. Third St. Congress established a national day of remembrance called the "Spirit of 45 Day" to commemorate the end of World War II on Aug. 14, 1945. All are welcome to attend and participate in a breakfast afterward until 9 a.m. that is being offered at the Post and hosted by Vitas Innovative Hospice Care.Tomato Feast:From 1 to 3 p.m. today and Aug. 21 and 28, sample 30 varieties of tomatoes and 28 varieties of peppers at Tomato Feast at Spring Bluff Nursery in Sugar Grove. The nursery will offer recipes, garden tours and music, at no charge. It is at 41W130 Norris Road, Sugar Grove. See springbluffnursery.com.Batavia park party:The Batavia Park District's "Family Fest" is from noon to 3 p.m. today at West Main Community Park, 40W101 Main St. The free event is open to all ages and will feature a moon bounce, face painting and balloon art. Child identification kits will be given out, and school supplies raffled off. Concessions will be sold. Dogs are welcome, and will receive treat bags. The Bark Park will be open for use, and a dog obedience demonstration is at 1 p.m. See bataviaparks.org.Skateboarding contest:The Geneva Park District's skateboard contest is at noon Sunday at the Skate Park, 1800 South St. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. It is open to skateboarders 6 and older. The entry fee is $16 before Sunday and $20 on-site. To register in advance, visit genevaparks.org, the park district offices at the Geneva Community or Persinger Recreation centers, or by fax to (630) 232-4569. All participants must wear their own safety equipment. Helmets are required. Participants younger than 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver. The waiver can be downloaded at genevaparks.org/sports spot.html.See Viking Ship:Friends of the Viking Ship will have a "Viking Visitors Day" from 1 to 4 p.m. today at Good Templar Park, 528 East Side Drive, Geneva. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for teenagers, and free for children 12 and younger. They will describe the ship's voyage in 1893 from Norway to Chicago, and discuss its renovation.
