Arlington Heights man dies in Chicago motorcycle accident
Police are still investigating a crash that left a 24-year-old Arlington Heights man dead on Chicago's north side.
Michael Lewandowski, of the 2600 block of Dryden Lane, was pronounced dead after 7:15 p.m. at Loyola University Hospital in Maywood, Cook County Medical Examiner Office officials said Tuesday morning.
Ofc. Robert Perez, a public information officer for the Chicago Police Department, said Lewandowski was heading westbound in the 8000 block of West Belmont Avenue at 7:04 p.m. when he slammed into the rear of a vehicle that was stopped and preparing to turn onto a side street.
He said Lewandowski flew off the bike, into the air, and landed on the windshield of the car stopped in front of him.
Perez added the bike continued moving, hitting two other cars in the eastbound lane of Belmont before stopping on the roadway.
"We're not sure at this point how the driver of the motorcycle landed on the windshield of the car in front of him," Perez said. "Investigators are still trying to determine how fast he was going at the time of impact."
Perez added it's unclear if Lewandowski was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
He said one of the drivers involved in the crash was cited for a non-moving violation during the incident. He said the non-moving violation is akin to driving without valid proof of insurance.
