Calling all teens to the Dundee Township Public Library

Most people grow up thinking libraries are a place for whispers or silence. But the Dundee Township Public Library is welcoming teens to talk, laugh and have fun with friends in a new group, the Teen Gaming Club.

The first meeting for the new club is one of three events aimed at bringing teens into the library this month.

“We're trying to bust the myth that once you walk through the doors you have to tiptoe and be quiet,” said Kirsten Finneran, public relations director at the library.

The Teen Gaming Club will meet for the first time from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday and will continue on the second Friday of each month at the library, 555 Barrington Ave., East Dundee.

Wii games like Mario Kart, Guitar Hero, Rock Band and Just Dance will be available as well as board games like Apples to Apples and Scrabble. Teens are also welcome to bring their own games.

Though perhaps not as fun-focused, the library will also hold a Sylvan practice ACT test at 9 a.m. on Dec. 18. College-bound teens are welcome to come for test-taking tips that morning as well as evaluations and score reports at a future meeting.

The practice test is free but students should bring a calculator.

Registration is required by Dec. 17 either at the Information Services desk at the library, on the Events and Registration page at dundeelibrary.info or at (847) 428-3661 ext. 308.

A Recycled Holiday Crafts program will also be held Dec. 18 and is open to adults as well as teens. Old magazines, pop cans and scraps of fabric will be provided for the 2:30 p.m. event. Registration is required for this program as well.

The December focus on teens is a chance for the library to reach out to an age group that doesn't ordinarily spend much time in the library, according to Finneran.

“Kids love the library and adults love the library,” Finneran said. “We're trying to keep that love of the library continuous through their lives.”

Past library events aimed at teens have included a launch party for the movie “Eclipse,” a Harry Potter release party and a Teen Horror fest.
