Man accused of beating girlfriend's toddler

EDWARDSVILLE -- Authorities in southwestern Illinois contend a St. Louis man beat his girlfriend's 15-month-old son, leaving the child with broken bones and missing teeth.

Madison County prosecutors have charged 26-year-old Keshawn Bush on Thursday with aggravated battery of a child.

Granite City police arrested Bush at a motel Wednesday afternoon after fielding reports of an injured child.

The boy was taken to a hospital with injuries police don't consider life-threatening. There's no word on his condition Friday.

Bush's mother, Linda Johnson, says she was surprised to hear about her son's arrest and she doesn't think he's capable of hurting a child. She described Bush as "a good kid."
