Torres to start Tuesday in Detroit

Manager Ozzie Guillen all but confirmed that Class AAA right-hander Carlos Torres will start Game 2 of the day-night doubleheader Tuesday in Detroit.

Guillen indicated he and general manager Ken Williams will talk Monday to discuss who must be demoted to make room for Torres' spot start.

Teahen's timetable: Mark Teahen doubled and walked twice Sunday in his second game of injury rehab at Class AAA Charlotte.

When Teahen has enough at-bats under his belt - perhaps by the series opener Friday at Baltimore - he'll return to the Sox in a utility role.

"He's not just going to be a third baseman," Guillen said. "We're going to need him in different places and hopefully he'll continue to swing the bat the way he did. Maybe that's the left-handed bat we want."

Pierre's surprise: With two outs in the fifth inning Sunday, Juan Pierre drove in Brent Lillibridge from third with a perfect bunt single.

If you thought that stunned the Athletics, imagine Pierre's surprise when he peeked down at third and noticed Kevin Kouzmanoff dropping back to normal depth after Pierre fouled off a 1-0 pitch.

That never happens to the 32-year-old leadoff hitter.

"That's why I was shocked to see it," Pierre said. "I was like, 'OK, just get this one down.' They're always in, even with two strikes. Or at least even with the bag.

"You just try to take advantage of it because all my hits are designed on angles, anyway. If I may have hit a groundball, (Kouzmanoff) being back it probably would've been easier."
