Hoffman Estates speaker series takes on songs of the Civil Rights Movement

Singer-songwriter Chris Vallillo and members of the Hoffman Estates High School Choir will present "Oh Freedom, Songs of the Civil Rights Movement" on Thursday, Feb. 1, as part of the Hoffman Estates Arts Commission's Annual Speaker Series.

The presentation is set fort 7 p.m. at village hall, 1900 Hassell Road in Hoffman Estates. The show was created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement. From “We Shall Overcome” to “This Little Light of Mine,” music played a vital role in the historic struggle, both as an inspirational rallying point and as a way to spread the message of equality and justice.

Intermixed with the music, Vallillo will present firsthand accounts of the historic struggles and discuss the impact of music on the movement.

Admission is free, but registration is encouraged. Registration is available online at http://tinyurl.com/3aevwcww.
