Gilberts man sentenced for '08 hit and run

A 29-year-old Gilberts man was sentenced Thursday to 180 days in the Kane County jail for leaving the scene of a 2008 hit-and-run accident in East Dundee that killed a Carpentersville man.

Scott C. Schuman, of the 500 block of Kathleen Street, pleaded guilty in June to one count of leaving the scene of an accident involving death, a Class 4 felony,

Authorities say Schuman was driving a Jeep Cherokee east on Route 72 about 12:45 a.m. Aug. 6, 2008 when it he struck and killed 27-year-old Patrick Simpson of Carpentersville. Simpson apparently was walking in the middle of the right lane on eastbound Route 72 when he was hit, police said.

A news release from the Kane County state's attorney's office said Schuman continued driving, made several phone calls and sent several text messages from his cell phone before driving to a friend's house in Algonquin. Police said the friend reported the accident to police, but Schuman never called 911.

Police said the driver's statements, witness statements and damage to the vehicle were consistent with the accident.

In addition to the six-month jail sentence, Schuman must also serve 30 months probation. During that time, he cannot drive or drink alcohol, and must undergo a psychological evaluation and follow all its recommendations. Schuman must also serve on six victim-impact panels.
