Your news: Take me out to the ballgame

For eight consecutive weeks this summer, beginning on Monday, June 12, the Des Plaines Park District and the Des Plaines Youth Commission have sponsored a High School Co-Rec Softball League for students 14- to 19-years old. The 17 teams, of up to 16 players each, play 14" slow pitch softball according to ASA (Amateur Softball Association) rules, on Saturday nights from 5:30-9:30 p.m., at Rand Park ball fields. The championship will be decided in a single elimination tournament, played between the top eight teams, on Saturday, Aug. 14.

"The level of play is recreational, with the emphasis squarely on having a good time out on the field with teammates and opponents alike," said Joshua Cantres, athletic supervision for the Des Plaines Park District. "This is one of our most popular programs," he continued. "It gives over 200 high school kids a safe, supervised place to go on a Saturday night during the summer, and it fosters teamwork, friendly competition and a healthy lifestyle."

As of Saturday, July 24, The Prime Time Players are in first place with a record of 7 wins and 0 losses, followed by Lights Out with a record of 5 wins and 1 loss, and Large & In Charge with a record of 4 wins and 1 loss. Teams will play two more regular season games on Saturdays, July 31, and Aug. 7 before the playoffs.

Registration is in progress now for both Men's and Co-Rec Fall Softball. Men's 12" leagues will play Sundays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays. Men's 16" Softball leagues will play on Tuesdays, and Co-Rec 14" Softball will be played on Wednesdays. The eight game regular season begins in August.
