Gun pulled from Long Grove-area pond; help sought in ID'ing victim
A search of a retention pond on Lake-Cook Road for a gun tied up traffic for hours on Lake-Cook Road near Palatine Thursday morning.
The gun was evidence in an apparent suicide attempt, Lake County Undersheriff Chuck Fagan said. An unidentified man believed to be in his late 40s with a gunshot wound to his right temple is on life support at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, he said.
Police were called at about 4:40 a.m. when a motorist found a man unconscious and bleeding from a head wound on a bridge over a retention pond on Lake-Cook Road near Hicks Road bleeding, Fagan said.
The search for the gun began about 9 a.m., and traffic on Lake-Cook and Hicks roads was restricted, with long backups ensuing. Fire department divers using boats and sonar recovered a single-shot derringer about noon, Fagan said.
Authorities are seeking help identifying the victim, described as a white male, about 6-foot, weighing 200 lbs. The victim was wearing a Levi jean jacket and jean pants, with Puma brand tennis shoes and has a dragon-like green and red tattoo on his right forearm.
Anyone with information that would be helpful is asked to call the Lake County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division at (847) 377-4250.
