Jackson to work with Cooper
Though he needed to sweat out 27 hours in trade-deadline purgatory, Edwin Jackson wound up jumping 20 games in the standings thanks to Friday's trade between Arizona and the White Sox.
"From worst to first," he said Saturday with a smile.
Jackson gets his first chance to help the White Sox stay in the AL Central lead Wednesday at Detroit. But first he will throw a bullpen session Sunday under the watchful eye of new pitching coach Don Cooper.
Jackson said he's dealing with a chronic mechanical issue that explains why he ranks among the most inconsistent starters in the majors.
Jackson, 26, posted a 2.52 ERA in the first half last season with Detroit to earn a spot on the all-star team but has posted a 5.12 ERA in the 36 starts since.
Each of his relevant ratios (hits, walks, strikeouts and homers per 9 innings) has gotten worse over the last 54 weeks.
Then again, one of his last starts for Arizona became a 149-pitch no-hitter June 25 at Tampa Bay.
"It's a simple problem," Jackson said. "Most times you see somebody in a funk, it's mostly a simple solution. It's just a matter of finding out what it is.
"It's something that I've known before, but it's just a matter of just going out and doing it consistently. Staying with it and not getting away from it."
Starter wanted: Even with Edwin Jackson on the scene, the White Sox need to find a starter for the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader at Detroit.
Carlos Torres, who ranks eighth in the International League with a 3.41 ERA, seems like the most likely candidate. The 27-year-old took his last turn at Class AAA Charlotte on Thursday, which would give him his normal four days' rest.
Mark Buehrle goes in Tuesday's opener, while Freddy Garcia handles Thursday's finale.
Lucas Harrell, who won his major-league debut Friday before returning to Charlotte, can't return for Tuesday's game as rules require him to spend 10 days in the minors after being optioned.
Teahen to AAA: Third baseman Mark Teahen began his injury-rehabilitation assignment Saturday at Class AAA Charlotte.
Teahen, serving as the designated hitter, batted third and went 3-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and 2 RBI for the Knights. He hadn't played since fracturing his right middle finger May 30 at Tampa Bay.
"The Club" updates: MLB Network airs the third and fourth episodes at 8 p.m. Sunday. They're 30 minutes apiece.
The final two episodes debut at the same time Aug. 8. That's where you'll find MLB Network's coverage inside the White Sox's trade-deadline war room.
