Palatine WINGS fire caused by high winds, power lines

The recent fire that destroyed the WINGS resale shop in Palatine was due to high winds that resulted in downed power lines that made contact with the building, according to a statement released Thursday by the Palatine Fire Department.

All that's left now is the charred remains of the white building at Northwest Highway and Rohlwing Road. The shop contributed about $500,000 annually to Women in Need Growing Stronger, a nonprofit organization that provides support services to domestic violence victims and their families.

Investigators said that a utility pole flexed due to high winds during a severe weather event around 4 p.m. June 18, causing high voltage power lines between poles to slacken.

Investigators believe that when tension was placed back on the wires, they snapped and caused three power lines to drop, with at least one power line making contact with the building.

This contact electrically energized the structure and a fire started in the attic on the north side of the building.

The department's determination was based on witness interviews, a computerized lightning report, and video and photographic evidence.

WINGS has set up a temporary donation site at a warehouse at 345 Eric Drive in Palatine while searching for a permanent location.
