Man charged with Naperville Central break-in
A man remained in jail Friday on charges he burglarized Naperville Central High School.
Justin A. Kotas is being held on $3,000 bail on charges alleging burglary to a school and obstructing identification. The 21-year-old Naperville man will be arraigned Aug. 6.
A security official at Naperville Central, 440 Aurora Ave., alerted police after he spotted someone inside the school building about 1:30 a.m. June 21. Officers did not find any signs of forced entry, but they stopped Kotas for questioning after he was seen walking in the area.
Police found a box filled with Naperville Central computer software discarded near a tree, and they said Kotas had some school documents on him. Kotas also is accused of providing police with a false name when questioned.
A DuPage County grand jury indicted him earlier this week. His attorney filed the necessary paperwork for Kotas to be considered for DuPage County's mental illness court alterative program to treat an unspecified health condition.
Police said it's unclear if Kotas was seeking something specific. He is not a Naperville Central student. Two days after his arrest, however, the father of a 16-year-old student filed for a protective order barring Kotas from contacting his daughter. Kotas was the girl's boyfriend, according to the court documents. He does not have a criminal record.
