McHenry closes beachesThe McHenry County Department of Health closed three beaches this week and issued advisories for four others after conducting E. coli tests. The beaches were resampled Thursday with results available Friday at the website mcdh.info or by calling (815) 334-4585. The three closed beaches are: Dorothy Court, 211 Dorothy Court, Island Lake; Morrison Park Beach, 100 Lakeshore Drive, Lily Lake; and Wonder Woods 4, 5200 Wonder Woods Drive, Wonder Lake. The advisories are for: Lake Park Beach, 300 Lake Shore Drive, Crystal Lake; Indian Trails, Woods Creek Lake, Lake in the Hills; Indian Ridge 2 North, 4519-4603 NE Lake Shore Drive, Wonder Lake; and Sunrise Ridge, 3800 West Lake Shore Drive, Wonder Lake.Elgin motorcycle ride for kidsThe annual Chicagoland Ride for Kids to benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation will be held at 9:15 a.m. July 18 Elgin Community College, 1700 Spartan Drive. Escorted by local and state police, motorcyclists will ride together to raise money for medical research grants and family support programs. Minimum donation is $35 per motorcycle. The ride will culminate at the college with a Celebration of Life program featuring onstage interviews with local childhood brain tumor survivors and award presentations to top fundraising chapters, clubs, individuals and motorcycle businesses. There will be a grand prize drawing for a new Honda motorcycle. Free coffee and pastries will be available for breakfast and a light lunch at the end of the ride. Volunteers are needed to help unload electronics equipment such as computers, televisions, and telephones from the public's vehicles. The program operates on the second Friday and Saturday of each month at the Circuit Clerk building on Randall Road in St. Charles. Call the county's recycling office at (630) 208-3841 or e-mail recycle@co.kane.il.us.Depot open weekendsThe Dundee Township Visitor Center, also known as The Depot, at 319 N. River St. in East Dundee is open for the season. Located adjacent to the Fox River Bicycle Trail, The Depot is for walkers, runners, cyclists and in-line skaters to take a minute to enjoy the surroundings. The Depot offers snacks, beverages and a restroom, as well Dundee-themed merchandise. It's open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Extended weekday hours will be added in June.
