Dad charged with getting teen so drunk needed hospitalization

An Algonquin father is facing up to a year in jail after his arrest on allegations he gave his 13-year-old son so much alcohol Wednesday night the boy became ill and was hospitalized.

Albert R. Loleng, 48, was arrested late Wednesday on misdemeanor charges of endangering the life or health of a child and unlawful delivery of alcohol to a minor.

Loleng, of the 0-100 block of Lake Gillian Court, was transported to the McHenry County jail after his arrest, and remained there Friday unable post a $100 bond.

According to a petition from the boy's mother seeking an order of protection, the boy was found unconscious in his home Wednesday night by his sister. She called 911 and paramedics took him to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, where he was treated and released.

"Paramedics told (the sister) it was a good thing she called 911 right away, otherwise my son could have died," the mother's petition states.

Algonquin Deputy Police Chief Steve Kuzynowski said the boy and Loleng were drinking tequila and wine together prior to the 13-year-old falling unconscious in a master bedroom. Police were called to the home about 10:35 p.m., he said.

Besides alcohol, the boy also had marijuana in his system, according to the petition. An emergency order of protection was granted Friday, requiring Loleng to stay away from his home and family for at least two weeks, when a full two-year order could be issued.

The criminal complaint against him alleges he "willfully caused the life of a child under the age of 18 to be endangered in that said defendant provided liquor to (the boy), causing him to become highly intoxicated and require medical attention."

Loleng, who could be sentenced to up to a year in jail and fined $2,500 if convicted, is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 15.
