Even with rival track, Arlington Park still welcomes Hoffman residents

Even though Arlington Park President Roy Arnold said he wasn't "enthused" and was "a little disappointed" that Hoffman Estates officials were going forward with an off-track betting parlor, Hoffman Estates residents will still earn the racetrack's appreciation.

Arnold's remarks come from an interview I did with him in May 2009 after news that the Hoffman Estates village board had approved plans for the Saddle Room, an OTB facility and restaurant near the Sears Centre Arena. The Saddle Room was supposed to open this year, but its owners postponed construction due to credit problems.

The OTB component will be operated by Inter-Track Partners based out of Melrose Park. Inter-Track is Arlington Park's chief rival in the OTB business. Horse tracks nationwide have been struggling, with some, including Arlington Park, asking for slot machines to increase attendance.

Having a rival move close to the track could hurt the track further and divert customers Hoffman Estates. But despite the disappointment, Arnold vowed to continue to be a good neighbor to Hoffman Estates' residents.

Arlington Park is keeping its promise. Once again, they're offering Hoffman Estates residents discounted admission. Sunday, Aug. 1 is Hoffman Estates Community Appreciation Day. Residents can receive two free tickets to the track or a $10 package, which includes food and drink discounts. Check out arlingtonpark.com for more information.
