Naperville cops charge two with texting, DUI
Two men were charged with texting their girlfriends while driving drunk over the July 4 weekend in Naperville, police said Friday.
Montie L. Skaggs Jr., 18, was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and single counts of operating a motor vehicle while texting and improper lane use following his run-in with police.
Christopher B. Kwafo, 38, was charged with DUI, operating a motor vehicle while texting, improper lane use, failure to signal and driving 70 mph in a 40 mph zone.
Skaggs' blood-alcohol level exceeded the legal limit when he was arrested, Sgt. Gregg Bell said. Kwafo refused to take a sobriety test.
Skaggs was pulled over and arrested about 5 a.m. July 4 near New York Street and Route 59, Bell said. He said an officer noticed Skaggs was driving erratically while playing with his cellular phone.
Skaggs admitted to texting his girlfriend, Bell said.
Kwafo was arrested at 2:28 a.m. July 5 near Aurora and Ogden avenues, Bell said.
A patrol officer noted Kwafo driving 70 mph, 30 mph over the posted limit, Bell said.
Kwafo also admitted to composing a text message at the time. He said he was hurrying to his girlfriend's house when he was stopped.
Both men are free on bail, Bell said.
