Two injured in Sugar Grove crash
Two people were hurt when a Volkswagen Jetta and a semitrailer collided Wednesday on Route 47 in Sugar Grove.
The driver of the Jetta, 29-year-old Romon Alcaraz of Aurora, is in serious condition at Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, according to Sugar Grove police.
The truck's driver, 57-year-old Robert B. Seifert of McNabb, Ill., was treated at Mercy and released.
The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. near the Routes 56/30 overpass. The road was closed for five hours for investigation.
Police say witnesses told them the Jetta was traveling south and the truck north. Witnesses told police the Jetta crossed the median, hit the truck, sideswiped its trailer, then went under the rear of the trailer. The trailer's rear wheels went over the front of the Jetta.
The witnesses also told police it appeared Alcaraz lost consciousness before the crash.
The trailer was carrying a full load of mulch. It is owned by Mid-States Cartage Inc. of Tonica.
Sugar Grove police are still investigating the cause. They were assisted by the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team, the Kane County Sheriff's Department, the Kane County Office of Emergency Management and the Illinois State Police.
