Garden to open in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood

One of Chicago's most downtrodden neighborhoods is getting a boost.

The Heritage Station Community Garden opened in Englewood last week.

Terina Cranshaw-Hodges is the head the group Stay Environmentally Focus'd. She says the garden celebrates the history of the community and a greener future.

Englewood was once a thriving commercial district, but many sections have fallen into deep disrepair and neglect in the last four decades.

The group says the neighborhood has one of the highest percentages of open space among Chicago communities.

The garden opened Wednesday. It has flower beds, fruit trees, a walking path and a mural.

Money for the project comes from the Exelon Foundation and planning has been organized through Openlands, a nonprofit organization.
