Bensenville approves one paintball arena, delays another

Amid resident protests, Bensenville leaders have delayed approval of an outdoor paintball business hoping to open in the village, while approving another indoor facility.

The proposal for Project Storm, an outdoor arena slated to open at the former Legends Golf Course at 811 E. Grand Ave., was tabled this week at the operator's request.

"The petitioner chose to actually delay the opening for summer-fall of this year, just given the time constraints and the desire to work through issues being expressed by the neighborhood," said Village Manager Michael Cassady.

More than 40 residents petitioned against both businesses, although village officials approved earlier this month the indoor O'Hare Paintball at 1071 Thorndale Ave.

Cassady said there is no set date on when O'Hare Paintball will open, but the 52-acre Project Storm is eying March 2011.

"This gives us time to craft an ordinance that protects both the neighborhoods and paintball players," Cassady said.

The village plans to schedule a neighborhood meeting in the area around the old golf course to work thorough disagreements, he added.

Resident Joe Pisano launched a petition drive against both facilities earlier this summer, citing potential traffic and noise concerns.

Project Storm can host 100 players per day, while the 71,000-square-foot O'Hare Paintball can hold 60.

Pisano also cited aesthetic concerns for the outdoor arena.

"I feel (Project Storm) will be an unsightly presence because they are talking about putting huge netting around the Legends site," he said in June.

He also expressed concern the paintball guns would be confused with real weapons and that they could cause damage to cars in the neighborhood.

But Bensenville officials say the businesses will produce sales tax revenue during a recession. They also fit in with village amenities such as the Redmond Recreational Complex and Edge Ice Arena.
