Carpentersville teen gets three years for robbery

An 18-year-old Carpentersville man was sentenced to three years in prison Friday for his role in beating and robbing a man of $300 and electronic devices after dragging him from his car in October 2009.

Demetrius White, of the 2100 block of Teepee Avenue, pleaded guilty to felony robbery before Kane County Judge Jordan Gallagher.

If White behaves himself in prison, he will only have to serve about 18 months. He also gets credit for serving 128 days in jail, must pay $950 in restitution and will be on parole two years after his release from prison.

A 31-year-old man told police that White and two others dragged him out of his parked car and into a nearby garage at about 6:38 p.m. Oct. 29 in the 2100 block of Teepee.

The victim told police the trio put him on a couch and punched him in the face and stomach. The garage door was locked, they took his keys and wouldn't let him leave until he called a friend, who brought $200.

The men returned the car keys and told the victim to keep his mouth shut or he would be killed, according to Carpentersville police.

The victim called 911 and later discovered that $100 from his pants pocket, his car stereo/CD player, iPod, stereo amplifier and speakers were gone.

"(White) knew about the plan. He knew it was going to occur and was present when it did occur," Assistant State's Attorney Danielle Bechtold said.

Bechtold also cited White's prior arrests and sentences of probation for burglary, robbery and twice for criminal damage to property.

Two other teens from Carpentersville also were arrested in connection with the robbery.

Phillip M. Hill, 19, of the 0-99 block of Oxford Drive, was sentenced to probation in January.

Bryant L. Ferguson, 19, of the 2700 block of Hopi Lane, was sentenced to four years probation and ordered to pay $1,815 in fines and fees last year. But court records show he is accused of violating his probation in January.
