Police: S. Barrington man dragged Carpentersville man with car
A South Barrington man is accused of dragging a Carpentersville man roughly 40 feet down the road with his car.
Edwin M. Nyden, 67, of the first block of Witt Road, has been charged with aggravated battery for using his 1999 Honda Accord as a deadly weapon, according to court records.
Police said that at 8:03 p.m. Sunday, the victim saw Nyden back into and knock over his Harley-Davidson motorcycle that was parked on the 1600 block of Elgin Road in Carpentersville.
The victim approached Nyden, who was in the driver's seat, and leaned into the open driver's side window to talk to him, Police Cmdr. Michael Kilbourne said.
"It says then the car was placed into Drive and his (left) arm became entangled inside the vehicle" as Nyden accelerated, Kilbourne said.
The man broke free and fell to the ground after he was dragged approximately 40 feet, police said.
He suffered minor injuries, but refused medical attention, Kilbourne said.
Charging documents say Nyden hit the man with his car and then dragged him, but police reports don't mention Nyden striking him with the car.
Kane County Judge Bruce W. Lester set Nyden's bail Monday morning at $75,000.
He was released Monday morning after posting 10 percent of that amount. According to bond court proceedings, Nyden has previously faced charges of involuntary manslaughter, larceny and serious drug offenses.
His next court date is July 7 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
Aggravated battery is a Class 3 felony that carries between two and five years in prison. An extended prison sentence ranges between five and 10 years.
