With benefits come responsibility

While I am not without sympathy for Liuan Chen Huska's mother's situation (see Guest Columnist 5/31/10), her mother is in America illegally, as was her stepfather. If they were here legally, there would be no need for Liuan to tug on people's sympathy in an effort to sway opinions on immigration. Families that are split, when deportation occurs, often blame the government. The responsibility falls squarely on the shoulders of those who would not follow the process for becoming an American citizen, even if it is a complicated, lengthy process. If America is such a desirable place to live, then please follow the rules that were set in place to keep it such a desirable homeland.

I like that America is a "melting pot" and I like that my children have grown up in a diverse community. What troubles me is when people want the benefits of something but not the responsibility that goes with it.
