Pscyhadelic Furs bring their snarl back to the Metro

Totally!

British band the Psychedelic Furs dominated 1980s mix tapes with infectious punk-inflected songs like "Pretty in Pink" and the friendlier pop they created later in their career ("Heartbreak Beat"). The group's biggest asset was the gravelly, accented snarl from lead singer Richard Butler. The Furs, who reunited in 2001 after a hiatus, will bring the snarl back to the stage this weekend.

The Psychedelic Furs play with She Wants Revenge at 8 p.m. Friday, June 11, at Metro, 3730 N. Clark, Chicago. $28.50. Go to metrochicago.com.

Smooth style

Rising pop star Iyaz (who recently appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show") performs this weekend in the suburbs. Iyaz is a native of the Virgin Islands whose soulful, reggae-inflected pop is starting to turn heads in the U.S. His debut record, "Replay," just came out this week and includes the singles "Solo" and the title track.

9 p.m. Saturday, June 12, at John Barleycorn, 1100 American Lane, Schaumburg. $15. Go to johnbarleycorn.com.

Not so funny

Steve Martin is a legendary comedian, but he'll be wearing a different hat - that of musician - when he plays this weekend at Ravinia. Martin will be performing bluegrass and banjo music with the Steep Canyon Rangers and the Punch Brothers.

7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 12, at Ravinia, 418 Sheridan Road, Highland Park. $22 for lawn seats ($27 on the day of the show; pavilion sold out). Go to ravinia.org.
