Time to change voting process?

The position of U.S. Senator is one of the highest, most important, and most powerful positions in our country. Can someone please advise me as to what the young Mr. Alexi Giannoulias has done to seriously deserve consideration for this position? What are his qualifications for such an important and complex position? Is he really among the best candidates this state has to offer for this critically important position? Isn't there something seriously wrong with the way candidates are selected for such extraordinarily important and demanding positions?

I wish we had a system where an absence of a sufficient number of votes for a candidate would automatically require the selection of another candidate and another vote. Would this seriously complicate the election process? You bet it would. But it just might enable us to one day have more desirable and qualified candidates offered for such important positions as governor and U.S. Senator. That's my opinion.
