Gurnee police crack down on drunken, drugged driving

Gurnee police say they started a special enforcement period Wednesday that'll focus on drunken and drugged driving. The stepped up enforcement will last through July 4.

Police were not specific in their announcement, but said they will use "driver enforcement activities" throughout the village. Gurnee police received money from the Illinois Department of Transportation and National Highway Safety Administration for the ramped-up focus on drivers who have had too much to drink or have been consuming drugs.

"Too many people still fail to understand that alcohol and driving don't mix," Gurnee Police Chief Robert Jones said. "Impaired driving is no accident, nor is it a victimless crime. It is vitally important we bring this tragic situation to an end."
