Missing Ill. researcher went over Niagara Falls
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- Authorities say a missing University of Illinois researcher died in an apparent suicidal plunge over Niagara Falls.
New York state parks police say the body of Jayandran Palaniappan was pulled from the lower Niagara River last Thursday. They released his identity Tuesday.
Published reports say colleagues of the 34-year-old bioengineering researcher feared he was suicidal after learning his position at the university wasn't going to be renewed. The News-Gazette of Champaign reported Palaniappan left behind notes and that the case is being investigated as a suicide.
Witnesses reported seeing a man going over the Falls on May 11.
Palaniappan was a native of India who was living in Champaign, Ill.
