One killed in two-car crash in Rutland Township

A Hickory Hills woman was killed Monday afternoon when she apparently failed to stop for a red light and was struck by another vehicle at Route 47 and Big Timber Road in Rutland Township, police said.

The intersection was closed for about 3 1/2 hours following the crash at about 2 p.m.

According to the Kane County Sheriff's Department, Gloria Spadaro, 67, was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Impala east on Big Timber when she entered the intersection.

The Impala was struck on the driver's side by a 2006 Chevrolet HHR being driven south on Route 47 by Rodrigo Cerna, 24, of Genoa, police said.

Spadaro was pronounced dead at the scene. Cerna was taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin with nonlife threatening injuries, police said. Both were the only occupants in their respective vehicles.

The intersection is controlled by a traffic signal.

"Based on the initial evidence at the scene it appears the HHR had the green light and the Impala failed to stop for the red light," according to a release from the sheriff's office.

Police said it is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. No tickets had been issued as the investigation continues.

Sheriff's deputies were assisted by officers from the Huntley, Pingree Grove, Gilberts and Hampshire police departments and the Kane County Office of Emergency Management.
