Unions drive up cost of teacher pensions
Your recent Sunday editorial on Springfield's broken promise on pensions makes an important point, but if the key question is accountability, you gave the teacher's union an unwarranted free pass.
The teacher's union, with plenty of political support, are the ones that have driven up both educational salaries and the total cost of education.
Instead of just scolding our politicians, let's look at what the teacher's union has been able to extract from our school board and our communities, in terms of additional dollars. If that extraction hadn't happened, the pension shortfalls would be a fraction of what we face today.
