Australia's Lee beats medalist Vick in US Junior Amateur
OOLTEWAH, Tenn. (AP) - Australia's Fred Lee beat stroke-play medalist Travis Vick of Houston 2 and 1 on Thursday to advance to the U.S. Junior Amateur quarterfinals.
The 16-year-old Lee topped China's Ye Wocheng in the morning in the round of 32.
"It definitely proves that my game is solid," Lee said. "It showed out there today. I didn't miss many greens and I hit quite a few fairways."
Lee will face Noah Goodwin of Corinth, Texas, a 3-and-2 winner over Nicholas Lyerly of Salisbury, North Carolina, in the round of 16.
"It was one of those days where you just get beat by the putter," Vick said. "Inside of 15 feet, he was very, very clutch."
In the other upper-bracket quarterfinal, South Korea's Won Jun Lee will play John Pak of Scotch Plains, New Jersey. Won Jun Lee beat Cole Hammer of Houston 1 up, and Pak topped Brent Ito of Ardsley, New York, 3 and 2.
In the lower bracket, second-seeded Eugene Hong of Sanford, Florida, will face Wei Wei Gao of the Philippines, and Brandon Gillis of Nashua, New Hampshire will play Australia's Min Woo Lee.
Hong beat Austin Coggin of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, 5 and 4; Gao topped Austin Eckroat of Edmond, Oklahoma, 4 and 3; Gillis edged Ashkaan Hakim of San Ramon, California, 3 and 2; and Min Woo Lee outlasted Frankie Capan of North Oaks, Minnesota, in 19 holes.
The 16-year-old Hong rallied to beat Davis Shore of Knoxville, Tennessee, in 23 holes in the morning.
"After you beat someone that good, you gain a lot of confidence in your game," Hong said. "I had to hit a lot of quality shots and make a lot of putts."
Min Woo Lee is the younger brother of LPGA Tour star Minjee Lee.
