Kids, adults invited to join library's reading program

Plots, prizes, and pages filled with information and entertainment await patrons of the Dundee Township Public Library who are ready to participate in one of summer's most classic pastimes - reading. The Summer Reading Program offers something for everyone this year.

For children, this year's theme is "Reading Country." During signup, children will receive a reading log to track their progress. Infants through first-graders must read (or have read to them) 300 minutes; second through fifth grade must read 600 minutes; and sixth through eighth grade must read 900 minutes.

Kids are encouraged to bring their logs to the library at the halfway point to get stamped and receive a special incentive. Upon completion of their minutes, readers are invited to come to the children's department to receive a free paperback book and other prizes.

For adults, the program centers on the theme "The Art of Reading." Participants must read, listen to or download five books from the library. Each patron who signs up will receive a reading log and library pen. Fill out additional logs for multiple entries into the grand prize drawing.

In tandem, "The Art of Reading in Movies" offers more chances to win prizes by attending free movies that are film adaptations of books, which include: "Bright Star" about poet John Keats on June 24; "Dear John" on July 19; and "Shutter Island" on July 21. All movies start at 6 p.m.

Prizes include weekly gift card drawings as well as the Reader/Movie Review Prize Drawing. Share your opinions about the books you read or any of the free movie screenings you attend at the library in June and July. The winner will receive a canvas tote bag filled with a journal, poet's notebook, archival ball writer pen set, book light, $25 movie gift card to Classic Cinemas and $10 Michael's gift card.

The grand prize winner, chosen from the reading logs, will receive a Kodak EasyShare 10.2 Megapixel digital camera, 2 GB memory card and camera case.

For teens, creativity is the key to this year's theme, "Recreate." Teens are encouraged to do what they do best - their own thing! Teens must read, listen to or download their own selection and then recreate it in their own way-take a photo, sing a song, write a poem, make a collage, create a video, make a puppet, do a cheer, build a model, do a dance - the sky is the limit. A prize drawing will take place at the conclusion of the program.

A current Dundee Township Public Library card is required for any of the reading programs, and all registration will take place on site at the library. All programs end on Aug. 7.
