Wolves' season ends with heartbreaking defeat
The Chicago Wolves didn't trail for a single second Tuesday night - until the stunning end.
Texas forward Jamie Benn scored 4:57 into overtime, propelling the Stars to a 6-5 victory in the seventh game of the Western Conference semifinals at the Allstate Arena. The Stars advanced to face the Hamilton Bulldogs in the Western Conference finals.
"It is tough to lose in a Game 7," said Wolves coach Don Lever. "Our guys gave their heart and soul and battled and scraped to get here. Our guys tried their best, but their best player won their game for them. You have to give them a lot of credit. They kept coming at us and we couldn't get our momentum back."
Things looked promising early for the Wolves when they scored the first 2 goals of the game just a minute apart.
Spencer Machacek got things started for the Wolves when he scored on a wraparound. Then Brett Sterling's persistence paid off when he pushed in his own rebound.
But as they did all game, the Stars fought back and netted a pair of goals less than a minute later.
Machacek scored a shorthanded goal in the first period and Tim Stapleton scored in the second.
Wolves goalie Drew MacIntyre stopped 47 shots , as the Stars outshot the Wolves 53-29 in the game and 9-2 in the overtime.
