Former College of Lake County baseball standout killed in crash

A former College of Lake County baseball standout was killed in a motorcycle accident in downstate Macomb, officials said.

Devin VanBrooker, a student from CLC from fall 2007 until summer 2009, died when he was thrown from a motorcycle after it collided with an SUV Tuesday night.

VanBrooker, a resident of Plymouth, was driving the motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger was injured in the crash.

VanBrooker, who played baseball for CLC in 2008 and 2009, led the nation with a 1.07 earned run average in 2009, to go along with a 5-1 record. He transferred to Western Illinois in 2009 after receiving a baseball scholarship, CLC officials said Friday.

"The coaches, players and administrators in our department are devastated by this tragedy, as I am sure those of you who were fortunate to have had Devin in your class or had just gotten to know him while he attended our college will be on hearing this news," CLC baseball coach Ken Kelly said in an e-mail. "I would ask that you all, in your own way, say a prayer for Devin and his family."

A CLC baseball game scheduled this week has been canceled so players from the team can travel to the funeral, CLC officials said.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Southeastern High School in Augusta, Ill. Visitation is Friday at 4 p.m., also at Southeastern. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Camp Point, Ill.
