Dundee Township parade, flags to honor veterans
The Patriot Committee of Dundee Township is inviting all Vietnam veterans to march in the Welcome Home Tribute parade. The parade will take place at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 30. Parade marchers are asked to be at Otto Engineering, 2 E. Main St., Carpentersville, by 4 p.m.
The parade will culminate at Carpenters Park, off Maple Avenue, where the Healing Field Flag Memorial is taking place. This event features a display of 1,748 American flags attached to 8 foot flagpoles which have been installed in a grid. The intent is to provide a moving tribute to the men and women who served in Vietnam or those who are currently in the military.
A United States Air Force flyover will take place at 5:45 p.m.
The 1,748 American flags honor each Prisoner of War and soldier Missing in Action from the Vietnam War across the span of five days over Memorial Day weekend. Each flag will display dog tags identifying the flag honoree. The event is free and open to the public.
Anyone wishing to honor or pay tribute to a loved one can purchase a flag throughout the five day event. Flags can be purchased in Carpenter Park or online at healingfield.org/Carpentersville. Proceeds from the flag sales benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dundee Township and the VFW.
For more information on the event or to order a flag, call Jerry Christopherson, Patriot Committee of Dundee Township, at (630) 730-0558.
