Newborn abandoned in box outside in Carpentersville

An abandoned newborn who may have spent 31 hours outside in a diapers cardboard box is doing well, Carpentersville police said.

The baby girl was discovered about 2 p.m. Saturday wrapped up in blankets behind a detached garage on the 1900 block of Bristol Circle.

Sgt. Matt Ostrem said the woman who found the baby in her next door neighbor's backyard believes she first saw the box at 7 a.m. Friday, meaning the newborn could have been outside for more than 31 hours. She was taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin with a low body temperature, but Ostrem said she's being observed and treated and is expected to recover.

Hospital staff estimated she was born between 24 and 36 hours before her discovery.

Ostrem said police have no idea who the baby belongs to.
