Hoffman Estates, Green Bay mayors wager over Slaughter game
A bet between the mayors of Hoffman Estates and Green Bay puts a new spin on an old football rivalry.
The Chicago Slaughter (4-5) and first-place Green Bay Blizzard (7-2) will face off Saturday night in an Indoor Football League matchup at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates. The Slaughter joined the IFL this season after winning the Continental Football League championship last year.
While the game won't have the sizzle of the long-running pro-football rivalry between the Bears and the Packers, Hoffman Estates Mayor William McLeod and his counterpart in Wisconsin, Green Bay Mayor James J. Schmitt, have placed a wager over who will win the game.
If the Slaughter wins, McLeod will receive steaks and a copy of Green Bay-opoly, the city's version of the classic board game, Monopoly. If the Blizzard wins, Schmitt gets a men's grooming kit from Mary Kay and a Craftsman tool kit from Hoffman Estates-based Sears.
"It's Green Bay, and there's always been this rivalry between Green Bay and the Chicago area, so we thought this would be a good idea," McLeod said Friday. "It's all in good fun."
McLeod said he is unable to attend the game, but village trustees will be there in his absence. He expects to meet Schmitt later this month to, hopefully, collect his winnings.
Before the 7:05 p.m. game, a boys a cappella choir from Conant High School in Hoffman Estates will sing the national anthem. The choir, the Do-Re-Migos, also will receive money from ticket sales. Call (847) 310-3190 and mention "Conant" to help benefit the choir.
Fans can also tailgate and attend a 6:15 p.m. "Trash Green Bay" rally at the Sears Centre's southwest parking lot.
