Cops: Toxic chemicals dumped into Fox River killing fish, wildlife

Two suspects have been questioned by police after chemicals dumped into the Fox River Saturday killed fish and wildlife.

The incident was reported just before 5:30 Saturday near the 1100 block of north La Fox Street, where witnesses told police they saw bubbles coming down the stream and fish popping up from the water.

South Elgin Police Sgt. Randy Endean said police and fire officials had to follow the bubbles and foam back to the source, which was near the 670 block of Sundown Road. Officials then discovered two people putting substances into the water, Endean said, but he would not comment on the type of chemical being released.

Illinois Conservation Police from the state's Department of Natural Resources are now leading the investigation and no charges had yet been filed Sunday, Endean said.

Workers were on site Sunday cleaning up the water and dead fish, and caring for wildlife affected by the spill, added Endean.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources could not be reached for comment Sunday.
