Second man charged in connection with fatal wreck

A Harvard man has been charged with obstruction of justice, in relation to a fatal hit-and-run crash in Harvard.

Alex G. Walker, 17, of the 19200 block of Altenburg Road, was arrested March 29 by the McHenry County Sheriff's Department.

Bicyclist Christopher Schaaf was killed March 18 at Graf and Maxon roads near Harvard.

The sheriff's department contends that Walker was a passenger in the vehicle that collided with Schaaf, but pretended to be a witness to the crash. He and the driver told sheriff's police to search for a dark, newer-model Chevrolet pickup truck, and that they had tried to follow the truck, but were unable to keep up with it.

It was determined March 25 that they were in the vehicle that collided with Schaaf, a Ford pickup. The driver, 20-year-old Steven Price of Harvard, was charged March 26 with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, driving without a valid license and obstructing justice.

A prepared statement from the sheriff's department said Walker and Price told investigators that they were afraid to report the accident, because neither had a valid driver's license.

Walker's bail was set at $5,000.
