Inmate charged with 2002 Fort Wayne stabbing death
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- A prison inmate serving a sentence for fatally stabbing a northern Indiana building inspector has been charged with committing another deadly attack.
Allen County prosecutors have filed murder charges against 33-year-old Joseph Kast, accusing him of repeatedly stabbing 85-year-old Claude Berkshire of Fort Wayne inside the man's garage in June 2002.
That attack happened nine days before the attack that killed Huntington County building inspector Earl Bowman. Kast was a construction worker at the building site. He pleaded guilty but mentally ill to murder and was given a 55-year sentence.
Fort Wayne police Deputy Chief Karl Niblick says investigators were told last year that Kast had details about Berkshire's death and that he confessed to the attack.
