Warren Twp. High astronomy club to meet
Astronomy is not just about stargazing.
Members of Warren Township High School's Astronomy Club will be demonstrating on Friday, April 16, just how vast the interest is as the student group hosts an evening for parents of Warren students as well as adults in the community interested in the science.
The purpose is to further celebrate astronomy following the International Year of Astronomy in 2009, and to highlight some of the best presentations Astronomy Club members have done in the past two years.
The club, in its 12th year, is growing, with active members and a strong following of dedicated students. In addition to in-the-field stargazing, the more than 40 members frequently dive into other areas of science like quantum physics, geology and the latest scientific discoveries. Seniors and other students are encouraged to show off their own interests and knowledge with at least one presentation in their high school career.
To be presented from 7 to 9 p.m. on April 16 are topics such as Space Age Materials, Galaxies, Alien Planets, Terraforming, Doomsday Scenarios and The Four Forces of the Universe. The goal is to give parents a sense of modern astronomy, share with them some of the more interesting phenomena in the universe and give back to the Warren Township High School community.
Presenting will be seniors Austin Thompson (Space Age Materials), Christo Miller (The Four Forces), Robbie Schultheis (Exoplanets) and Stephen Rudolf (Galaxies). Also presenting are juniors Katrina Litke (Doomsday) and Deirdre Heneghan (Terraforming).
Adults are encouraged to bring questions and their love of science to the event, in Room 235 of the Almond Campus, 34090 Almond Road, Gurnee. The program is free to all members of the high school community.
