Dye pack in stolen money explodes in subway

Authorities say some unexpected delays in the Chicago Transit Authority's Red Line service can be blamed on an escaping bank robber.

Police say a man who robbed a North Community Bank on the city's Near North Side on Tuesday afternoon tried to make his getaway by running into the Chicago Avenue Red Line subway station, but once he got there, the dye pack in the stolen money exploded.

Five ambulances were sent to the scene because Chicago Fire Department personnel at first thought there had been a small fire in the station.

Police say one person was treated at the scene for minor injuries from the dye pack explosion, the alleged robbery was apprehended, and afternoon rush hour Red Line trains were temporarily rerouted to the elevated tracks.
