Palin did much to prevent abortions
Froma Harrop's Sept. 2 column was too hard on Sarah Palin. By publicly accepting her daughter's unwed pregnancy, Gov. Palin did more to prevent abortions than all the ranters and clinic-pickets combined.
In the "good" old days, a family with a daughter pregnant out of wedlock would kick her out in the street, or send her away to carry and bear the baby in secret and force her to give it up for adoption, or shove her into a shotgun wedding.
Gov. Palin did none of those things, and by her example made it unacceptable for others to do them.
Why does a pregnant teenager get an abortion? Because she suddenly finds that she can't fit into her prom dress? Nonsense. She does it because she is desperate.
The best way to reduce abortions is to cut down the desperation factor. This is what Gov. Palin has done.
