Cops: Accused burglar called 911 for help, claimed he was being chased

A man and a teenage boy who called police claiming they were being chased were arrested and charged with burglary, Round Lake Beach police said Friday.

Officer Paul Grace said police received a call Wednesday about 11:50 p.m. from the pair, who said they were being chased by someone near Cedar Lake Road and Evergreen Drive.

About the same time, police received a call from a man who reported his vehicle was burglarized moments earlier by two people on the 400 block of Meadowgreen Lane.

The second caller also reported the burglars were running in the direction of Cedar Lake and Evergreen and gave a detailed description of the clothes they were wearing. Grace said the description matched the man and the teen.

"Through the course of the investigation, it was determined the two who called police were the two who burglarized the car moments before," he said.

The two were searched, Grace said, and the stolen property was recovered, along with a knife used to threaten the victim.

Heraldo Villanueva-Garcia, 21, of the 1500 block of Pleasant Avenue in Round Lake Beach was charged with felony burglary, and misdemeanor charges of aggravated assault and obstruction of identification. A 17-year-old boy was also charged with felony burglary and aggravated assault.

They were taken to Lake County jail, where bond was set at $25,000 each, Grace said.

"This is a good example of how the community can work with the police," he said. "The victim's description of the burglars and the information they gave us regarding the burglaries resulted in an important arrest."
