Pirates trade pitcher Vasquez to Rays

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded minor league pitcher Virgil Vasquez to the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named.

Vasquez went 2-5 with a 5.84 ERA last season in 14 games, including seven starts before being removed from the Pirates' 40-man roster. The The right-hander was among the first players cut during spring training.

The Pirates planned to use Vasquez as a starter at Triple-A Indianapolis. The Rays wanted Vasquez -- a former Tigers prospect -- for possible use in their bullpen this season.
