Nobel Peace Prize nominee to speak at fundraiser

Philanthropist, author and two-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee Greg Mortenson will share stories from his two autobiographical books Saturday in Rosemont.

Mortenson, executive director of the Central Asia Institute, will speak during the group's fundraising gala at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare, 9300 Bryn Mawr Ave., Rosemont.

The event, "Promoting Literacy ... Promoting Peace," will begin with a reception at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. Featured guests include America Ferrera from the popular television show "Ugly Betty."

Mortenson, a former mountain climber, has built more than 135 educational institutions for more than 50,000 children in Central Asia. He co-authored The New York Times best-seller "Three Cups of Tea" and recently released a sequel, "Stones into Schools," highlighting his mission to build schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan and his experiences with the Taliban and other militants.
