Applications taken for Batavia 3rd Ward vacancy
People interested in replacing Batavia 3rd Ward Alderman Cathy Barnard have until 5 p.m. May 3 to let Mayor Jeff Schielke know.
Letters of interest should be delivered to him at the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave.
Barnard stepped down this week. She is moving to Elburn.
Schielke and the Batavia City Council will interview applicants in an open session at 7 p.m. May 4, then vote May 17 for Barnard's replacement. The new aldermen will be sworn in at the first city council meeting in June.
This is the second time this year the council has had to replace a 3rd Ward alderman.
Linnea Miller died Jan. 12; she was replaced by Janet Jungels. The council also replaced 5th Ward Alderman Forrest Nelson at the same time, with Lucy Thelin-Atac. Nelson resigned in February because he moved out of the ward.
Aldermen considered appointing a replacement for the Barnard vacancy, but decided to stick with the council's customary procedure.
The person chosen will serve until April 2011, the next municipal election.
Barnard was first elected in 2003.
