Palatine man charged in undercover drug buy

A Cook County judge set bail at $40,000 Wednesday for a Palatine man charged with possession and delivery of a controlled substance and delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a park. The latter is a class X felony that carries a sentence of six to 30 years in prison.

Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Mark Javiar said a confidential informant met with Michael Elkin, 29, at Elkin's home in the 1500 block of Winslow for about three minutes on Tuesday.

Using police funds earmarked for such investigations, the informant paid Elkin $180 and received cocaine in exchange, Javiar said. Police then obtained a search warrant for Elkin's home where they recovered 2.1 grams of cocaine and other paraphernalia, Javiar said. According to police, Elkin made incriminating statements indicating that he sold the drug to make extra money, Javiar said.

Elgin's background includes court supervision in 2001 for retail theft.
