White Sox' Mitchell to have ankle surgery

White Sox outfielder Jared Mitchell is going to have surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left ankle.

The team said on Saturday that the operation is set for Tuesday.

Mitchell was injured while making a catch in a spring training game Friday. He left the game on a cart after crashing hard into the wall at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

The 21-year-old Mitchell, the White Sox' first-round draft pick in June, will be evaluated Monday and have surgery at an outpatient medical center in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Sox won't have a timetable for his recovery until after the surgery.

Berkman has knee surgery: Houston first baseman Lance Berkman is expected to miss 2-4 weeks after having knee surgery to remove loose cartilage from his left knee.

Astros manager Brad Mills said that the surgery Saturday showed there was no damage to the meniscus or ligaments. The timetable for Berkman's recovery puts him in jeopardy of missing Opening Day.

Indians' Wood has sore arm: Cleveland Indians reliever Kerry Wood missed his scheduled appearance against the Texas Rangers on Saturday with arm soreness.

Wood made 12 trips to the disabled list with various arm ailments and surgeries in 11 years with the Cubs. He signed a two-year, $20.5 million deal with Cleveland in December 2008, worked in 58 games in 2009, and is 1-0 in 2 scoreless innings this spring.

Twins' Span to get new deal: Center fielder Denard Span and the Minnesota Twins have agreed to a $16.5 million, five-year contract, a deal that includes a $9 million team option for 2015.

The 26-year-old Span became the Twins' everyday center fielder when they traded Carlos Gomez to Milwaukee in the off-season.
