Security experts urge better preparation for health catastrophes

Citing lessons learned from the response to the H1N1 "swine flu" virus, security experts are urging the U.S. health care system to make better preparations for health catastrophes.

The U.S. Center for Biosecurity in Pittsburgh said hospitals should: form coalitions to share resources and jointly respond to major disasters; establish triage sites outside of hospitals; arrange for private sector transportation for patients; and develop a national framework to coordinate responses.

The federally commissioned report found hospitals have made many improvements since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, but much work remains to be done.
