Barrington, Elk Grove each take 2
Indoors. Outdoors.
It doesn't matter to the defending Mid-Suburban League East and West Division softball champions.
One day after Elk Grove and Barrington each won a game at the McCook Max indoor facility in McCook, they came back Saturday and won two more apiece at the Barrington Quad on the Fields of Dreams.
Elk Grove (3-0) rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Stevenson 14-4 in six innings, then handled Mundelein 8-1.
The host Fillies (6-0) took two hours and twenty minutes to top Stevenson 12-8, then stopped Mundelein 10-1.
"That was the longest game I've ever been in," said Fillies junior first baseman Kiersten Tinkoff, who went 7-for-9 on the day with 7 RBI and 2 doubles. "We didn't play the way we usually play (against Stevenson). Thank God we got the win. Every time I came up to bat, I was thinking I've got to get a hit to help my team. I was just thinking about helping my team."
"Kiersten has been terrific for us," said Barrington coach Perry Peterson. "She is a doing a great job and is a great teammate to all her friends."
In her first 8 at-bats Saturday, Tinkoff was 7-for-7 with a walk.
She was 4-for-4 with a double, walk and 3 RBI against Stevenson, while Colleen Shandley, Kelsey Kazmier, Nora Logue (2 runs), Jordan Wekony (2 runs), Kristin Kuhn and winning pitcher Kiley Dolezal (5-0) each had a hit.
Losing pitcher Allison Mucucci (2-for-4, 2 runs), a senior, and junior Heather Cohen (2-for-3, 1 run) belted home runs, while junior Emma Patrash had a hit and scored 2 runs for the Patriots (0-4).
"It was a long day of softball," said Stevenson coach Larry Friedrichs, whose team had previously dropped close games to Fremd and Loyola. "Every year we come here and we know we're going to get good competition. Unfortunately, we keep coming up a little short."
Wekony (1-0) threw 5 innings (4 hits, 2 strikeouts) to get the win over Mundelein, while Tinkoff (3-for-5, doubles, 4 RBI, 2 runs) and Shandley (2-for-4, 3 runs, 2 stolen bases) led the offense. Kazmier walked three times.
"After that first game, I thought there was definitely some determination by the girls to come back and play well in our second game," Peterson said.
Elk Grove sweeps: Trailing Mundelein 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning, the Grenadiers had the bases loaded and two outs.
Four-year starting shortstop Olivia Roback then kick-started a rally of 14 unanswered runs against Mundelein. Roback singled to left for 2 runs followed by a 2-run single by sophomore Devan Parkison which tied the game after three innings.
"I just wanted to hit the ball hard and to try to get it through the infield or make them make a mistake with it," Roback said. "It just took us a few innings to get more fired up than they were."
Winning pitcher Stephanie Maday (2-0) went the final 32/3 innings to notch the win. She did not give up a run. After giving up a single to the first batter she faced, Maday retired 11 of next batters she faced.
"We were hitting the ball well the whole game," Maday said. "It just took a while for balls to start dropping in for hits."
Leading the Grens' offense were junior Jessica Balzano (4-for-4, 3 runs, 2 RBI), Roback (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI, walk), Parkison (2-for-3, 4 RBI) and sophomore Krista Soesbe (2-for-3, double, 2 runs).
Junior Kristen Cetkovic made two nice plays in right field, throwing out the leadoff batter in the second inning and making a nice grab on a liner in the seventh.
Senior Katy Durr had 2 hits for Mundelein (1-2) while junior Deanna Wise and sophomore Alex Hemmer each had 1.
Hemmer belted a 3-run homer over the center-field fence in the third inning which brought home Jessica Bjerning and Durr.
"I felt like our pitchers threw strikes and gave us a chance to win, but we had a lot of defensive letdowns," said Mustangs coach Ted Juske. "Ten errors in 14 innings (for the day) is too many. You aren't going to win too many games playing defense like that."
Leading the Grens offense in the win over Stevenson were sophomore Megan Keegan (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 runs), Parkison (2-for-4, RBI run) and Soesbe (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI).
"Megan (Keegan) has made unbelievable strides at the plate," said Elk Grove coach Ken Grams.
Grens sophomore Dani Goranson (1-0) got the win in the nightcap, striking out four and walking two while tossing a 3-hitter.
Patrish had a double for Stevenson (0-4), while junior Alyssa Mpistolarides and senior Genny Duffy each had singles.
