Healthy Heine leads Hampshire

With the dog days of January behind them and Chrissy Heine back in the lineup in time for Senior Night, the Hampshire Whip-Purs were back on track.

With Heine scoring 10 of her game-high 16 points in the first half, the Whips raced to a 43-8 halftime lead and coasted to a 71-38 win against Belvidere in nonconference girls basketball action in Hampshire Tuesday night.

Heine also had 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

Hampshire's full-court pressure forced 22 first-half turnovers that led to easy baskets at the other end.

"I thought we were looking for each other very nicely tonight," said Hampshire coach Sue Ellett. "The defense was spectacular in the first half. To hold anybody to 8 is coming out with a purpose."

Cassie Dumoulin had 5 of Hampshire's 16 steals to go with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Alex Dumoulin added 10 points and 7 rebounds. Kelsey Anderson and Karla Vietinghoff each had 7 points as all 9 Whip-Purs scored.

Bridget Dumoulin and Jessica Van Dorin each had 6 points off the bench for Hampshire (22-1).

The Whip-Purs, who travel to rival Burlington Central Friday night, started slowly, turning the ball over on 4 of their first 5 possessions. With the game tied 2-2, Hampshire scored the next 21 points. Van Dorin's first 3-pointer of the night ended the run. Her second made it 28-6 after one quarter. The Whips then held Belvidere to one second-quarter basket.

Courtney Ziegler scored 13 points for Belvidere (5-19). Tahlar Proctor added 9 points, all on second-half 3-pointers.

Heine's putback of her own miss made it 50-10 early in the third quarter before the Buccaneers closed out the period on a 13-4 run.
